The blade-adjustment mechanism works opposite of the same adjuster on a Stanley metal plane , you spin the wheel counter-clockwise to extend the blade. The blade-adjustment wheel is too puny. First, the soles are easy to true , far dating than truing the sole of a metal plane. When I fixed up my first jack plane, I spent days yes, days lapping the sole to dead flat.
I want those days back.

While meandering through an antique store, something toolish and vintage wooed me into a stall. It was a Stanley 26 transitional jack plane. But what set this one apart was its just-came-off-the-assembly-line looks. Even the tote and knob were intact with but one chip to show for its long life. And the Stanley logo dates it c. So it fits right in with my favored vintage tool time frame. You Stanley plane collectors will recognize that range as the type period.
At home the metal parts got dunked in Evaporust while the wood pieces slurped up a coat of BLO. The reassembled plane went into the vise upside down. Then a few light passes with a 8 trued up the sole. After sharpening the iron, I put the rehabbed jack to the test on some pine.

Before we get back to the some more interesting planes from the Stanley Model Shop I thought you might want to know a bit more about the Model Shop. A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood using muscle power to force the cutting blade over the wood surface. Some rotary power planers are motorized power tools used for the same types of larger tasks, but are unsuitable for fine scale planing where a miniature hand plane is used. Generally all planes are used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber or timber. Planing is also used to produce horizontal, vertical, or inclined flat surfaces on workpieces usually too large for shaping, where the integrity of the whole requires the same smooth surface.
Special types of planes are designed to cut joints or decorative mouldings. Hand planes are generally the combination of a cutting edge, such as a sharpened metal plate, attached to a firm body, that when moved over a wood surface, take up relatively uniform shavings, by nature of the body riding on the ‘high spots’ in the wood, and also by providing a relatively constant angle to the cutting edge, render the planed surface very smooth.
A cutter which extends below the bottom surface, or sole , of the plane slices off shavings of wood. A large, flat sole on a plane guides the cutter to remove only the highest parts of an imperfect surface, until, after several passes, the surface is flat and smooth.
